What Is Coming in 2012 for Photographers

As a photographer, I'm always on the lookout for new technology. One of the biggest problems with any type of photography and looking at the latest technology is the lack of emphasis on actually taking photos. It is all very well wanting the latest and greatest but at the end of the day you should be taking great photographs with whatever equipment you currently use. New technology might help you get the odd shot more efficiently or hit the focus on the head. There is headroom for higher resolution sensors to crop.

Saying the above though doesn't mean you should not ignore new technology. So what is coming this year? We've already had the announcements of Canon's new flagship 1D X and Nikon's new D4. These two models are pretty much competing with each other. While it's a little early for any solid reviews, the models both promise excellent focus in low light and another stunning boost to ISO levels. ISO levels are going to ensure you can take usable shots in more dark environments. This will obviously aid all those wedding photographers out there.

While it is all good and well that people who have a higher budget can buy these flagships, the 2nd level need these features too. This year should almost certainly see the launch of the Canon 5D Mark III and the D800 from Nikon. There is some speculation to whether the new X naming will be adopted across the other models for Canon. With the launch of the more compact G1 X camera people would think so, but both these models are a departure from their previous versions. The 1D X being an amalgamation of Canon's 1D and 1Ds range and the G1 X now having a large CMOS sensor. Even if the follow up 5D doesn't move away or amalgamate with the 7D, it will make sense from a marketing sense to adopt the X.

So what can we expect from the manufacturers number two cameras. Personally I believe the megapixel race to be well and truly over. I firmly believe the sweet spot to be 18-21 megapixels and that it will be realised too in the Canon and Nikon follow up. There is talk of the D800 having in the 30MP range but this wouldn't make much sense. Nowadays it's all about low light photography and getting the lowest noise possible. Higher Megapixels makes that harder to realise.

Lens wise, Canon has been much talked about with the 24-70mm Mark II or IS depending on who you talk to. This year is highly likely to have that rumour finally realised. We've already seen possible patents materialise but at this time Canon's position is anything short of firm. Canon has spent the last couple years actually rebooting their telephoto prime range and now it's time for the short focal ranges to get some attention. I think it's 100% certain we will see two lens replacements this year. Canon' isn't stupid and refreshing loads of lenses at once doesn't make sense from a marketing perspective.

There's one thing that is for sure though, 2012 is going to be an exciting year for photographers around the world. No matter where you are or what you do: weddings, portraits or just like to shoot, all eyes on are on the two biggest players in the photography market.

The Impact Of Snow On Your Wedding Photographs

It's been snowing! And the recent Snowfall has encouraged me to think about how well this rare snowy landscape would work for a wedding.

No matter when you book your wedding, it is always going to be impossible to predict the weather. I suppose this is why people tend to go for a summer date where it's more likely to be dry. But I wouldn't even count on that being in the UK. Imagine, though, you were to take the risk and go for a winter wedding, keeping your fingers crossed for snow. How great would your photographs look?

Snow would give the wedding photographer a great opportunity to experiment in ways usually impossible. For example, think about a portrait shot in the snow with all of the snowflakes out of focus and the bride & groom in sharp focus through the snow. Another possibility would be to capture the kids having snowball fights and playing in the snow. Having shots of the children playing in wedding photography albums is always popular so having the chance to do something new with that is fantastic. The possibilities are endless and the snowy backgrounds in your photographs would stand out from every other wedding photo album you have ever seen.

Snow, as we all know, has a natural reflective quality, and this quality could be very useful. Photographers are always thinking about different ways in which they can use light to enhance their images, and it often comes down to using artificial light, especially in weddings. In the event of a snowy wedding you could dump your lighting equipment and use your natural surroundings to help light your image. Think about how well the white of the dress and the white of the snow could work together.

But, like with everything else, there must be impracticalities. For example, during portraits taken outside the groom and especially the bride will get rather cold, your camera battery would drain much faster at the low temperature, and of course some guests might not be unable to attend, but you would certainly have a wedding to remember and a wedding album like no other. And besides, after all the trouble the snow has caused our country this winter, it's nice to remember how snow can also be great fun!
